A Hundred Honeymoons: A Novel starts like a feel-good story which turns into romance, drama, a wild lifestyle, and a comical story. Author J.S. Wilson is easy with his words. He starts the book in a simple fashion, describing events, characters, and locations. When depicting anything, the author wants the reader to feel as if they are present with them. I appreciate this style of J.S. Wilson’s writing as it makes the reading clearer, which in turn makes comprehension easy. A Hundred Honeymoons: A Novel starts easy and before you finish the first chapter you find yourself loathing and liking the characters introduced. The author gave major characters strong personalities, while he made the minor characters fun to follow, and polite in some way.
A Hundred Honeymoons: A Novel’ begins on Mitchell Drive. This is a six-block long, calm, and tranquil neighborhood in San Luis Obispo, California. Picture a small-town suburban neighborhood where the neighbors are friendly, families are tight-knit and crime is low. This is what Mitchell Drive is like. As a reader, you get the urge to try life in such an area because of how beautifully the author paints everything. In Mitchell Drive, we meet Sally; A young girl about to enter high school. Sally loves life and friendships. Her life is not that of a typical girl who grew up in a warm environment like Mitchel Drive. She may follow rules but will not conform at all times. Sally hates being boxed and loves her freedom.
On this other side, we have Todd; a young lad whom the reader likes instantly. Todd is a seeker. He enjoys experimenting, but also knows when to draw boundaries. Todd and Sally fall in love, but their relationship is filled with eccentric happenings, usual obstacles, and a series of dilemmas. I like that the author allows the reader to see how some relationships are in real life through this duo. From the two, I got to understand the meaning of ‘love is blind.’ Following the story of Todd and Sally was exciting. Theirs was not the only fun story, as the mini-tales involving people in their lives were also electrifying.
Of all the characters, I found Julia Anderson to be my favorite. Julia was Sally’s grandmother, and her guardian after Sally’s parents died. She raised Sally and her sisters Gail and Zoe. Though sometimes at fault, I like that the author brought out how much prudence Julia had. Especially when madness arose among the children. Every character was interesting; Kit, Maria, and Cecilia are among the characters that will fascinate any reader.
To enjoy A Hundred Honeymoons: A Novel think of yourself as a teenager – nonjudgmental, carefree, and perhaps a little careless. J.S. Wilson’s book is intended for romance lovers, readers who appreciate suspense and drama, and those who fancy a little fantasy. Young readers will particularly have a good time with this book because the author wrote about things which they can relate to.
