While many people with a fascination for space and how the universe works will look outward to the stars and beyond the confines of Earth’s solar system, some of the craziest and most fascinating insights can be found closer to home. Earth itself and how its celestial body operates are a constant source of study, from gravity and Earth’s rotation around the sun to so much more. Yet one area that is often overlooked is the risk Earth’s core has to an axis shift, which would greatly change the planet.
It is that shift that author Ruth Leedy Carr explores in the book Tipping Point for a Hollow Earth: How Asimov and Sagan Backed My Prophecy of a Polar Hole Shift to Europe. The book explores the works of Carl Sagan and Issac Asimov, as well as scientific and geological studies of both Earth and Mars as the author investigates the sweeping under the rug of the greatest planetary danger no one has ever heard of, and what it could mean for the world if left unchecked.
Immediately what strikes the reader is how well researched and educational the author’s writing style is, instantly delving into both the philosophical and scientific purposes behind passages not only in these two figures’ writing, but in the author’s own theories as well. The author not only draws upon science and her own intuitions but on historical and legendary works that have referenced the hollow earth theories, including many Arthurian legends. The world has engaged in many hollow earth theories and stories over the years, including works like John Uri Lloyd’s “Etidorpha” and yet the author of this book expertly used these works to form a scientific study that felt both insightful and engaging with each chapter which passed by. The exploration of Asimov’s works and riddles such as “Planet Earth be hollow” to showcase how these works can be interpreted to work with the author’s own theories is enthralling as the author lays out each explanation.
For those who enjoy nonfiction books, especially scientific and mathematical studies fueled by astronomy and space science studies and a hint of literature, mythology, and historical studies as well, this book really stands out. The way the author not only delves into these interpretations and theories surrounding hollow earth but includes diagrams and imagery with reference points for readers to go back and research for themselves made the book feel interactive and engaging, and with any book of this caliber, readers will know how well written the book is when they find themselves returning to it time and time again for reference. This visionary book challenges readers to open their minds to possibilities long ignored.
